The mission of the board of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota’s Greater Sucker Creek is to restore, preserve and maintain the native biodiversity of the Preserve and Upstream Sucker Creek for the education and enjoyment of all visitors.
Visitors are especially invited to this gem of northwest Minnesota parks, Greater Sucker Creek, 117 acres of natural woods and prairie, nurturing and boasting native biodiversity.
Greater Sucker Creek is its own 2-parcel mini-watershed leading from mineral springs in Upstream, along the creek in the Preserve to the mouth of Sucker Creek a short distance away at the south shore of Big Detroit Lake. Accessible paths, unimproved trails, marshwalks, designated trout stream, amphitheater and interpretive signs blend for restful nature learning.
Special natural features include native plant communities in wetlands, uplands and lowlands. Observant visitors may catch a glimpse of wildlife: fish, birds, amphibians, mammals, fungi and insects.
Always eager to share the gifts of its parks, the City of Detroit Lakes has launched a City-School Partnership to offer schools assistance for Greater Sucker Creek field trips.

The new Museum will also have an event space, coffee shop, and much more to make it a lake life destination in Detroit Lakes. In 1882, the citizens of Becker County recognized the need to preserve the history of the community. The result was the Pioneer Settlers Union, a group comprised of many founding residents, who actively worked to preserve the history of their community as it was happening. In 1924, this organization was renamed the Becker County Historical Society.
The Becker County Museum, founded in 1943, was initially housed in the basement of the Becker County Courthouse. Prior to that time, the "collection" was stored in a closet at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. The President of the Board of Trustees held the key!
As the collection grew, there were plans to renovate the old Holmes School building as a museum. However, a fire in 1980 prevented that from happening. In 1989, the Becker County Historical Society purchased our current building from the Assemblies of God congregation and converted it to the present museum.
Our current collection includes over 14,000 photographs and over 20,000 artifacts. We also have a research library open to the public during regular business hours, 10am until 4pm Tuesday through Saturday. Admission to the Museum, including the research library, is $5 per day for adults. All kids and all Museum Members enjoy free admission.

For the past few years he together with his wife and two kids have been going to Alaska in June for a couple months to fish. Most of the catch is being sold to the local fish canning company but they bring a couple ton of salmon back to Lakes Country where they smoke it and sell to local restaurants and food co-ops. Sunrise Salmon was formed in 2014 by Kevin and Stephanie Schmidt of Fergus Falls, MN. They spend their time outside of the summer fishing season raising their four young daughters and spreading the love of wild salmon throughout Western MN and Eastern ND.
Each summer they make the trek to Bristol Bay, Alaska to the town of Naknek. This is where they make fish camp every June-July for the annual sockeye salmon run. They are considered set netters, who target one of Alaska’s greatest gems- Kvichak River Reds. This is done with skiffs and a series of large nets and buoy systems on the edge of the bay. They feel extremely blessed to have been given this opportunity to live their summers marked by high & low tide, the barely setting sun and salt water on their faces. The 2019 season will be their twelfth season of fishing in Alaska.
