LAKE LIFE WKND 041 We like to share another podcast portrait with you. In this episode we interviewed Jack Chivers. Jack moved to Lakes Country in 1966 and has been growing a local Real Estate business since. He lives and loves Lake Life and has fulfilled many people's dream to live on a lake in our area.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, Jack wanted to see the world. After joining the Navy, serving his country and sailing all seven seas, his path led him to Minnesota, where he immediately became enamored with Lake Life.

Detroit Lakes became his home and Jack began working as a full-time real estate agent on April 1, 1966. His career started at Calhoun Realty, based in Minneapolis, where he worked for the following 13 years selling commercial properties and found his residential niche as a lakes expert for many of his clients. Jack always shared his passion about Detroit Lakes and Lakes Country, saying: Don't just visit... live it! On June 2, 1980, Jack founded his own agency Jack Chivers Realty in Detroit Lakes.

LAKE LIFE WKND 040 In this episode we have the pleasure and honor to speak with Kenny Nelson who is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the area and probably all of Minnesota. Back in 1971 he and his father started a small dog feed company in Perham which grew into a nation wide player in the dog food industry. After that Kenny started a couple more companies which became big in the snack and candy industry. Today, Tuffy's and KLN Family Brands are well known companies using manly local ingredients. A majority of key management positions are filled by Nelson family members and are resposible to grow the companies. Kenny is still active and passionate to be out with customers. Him and his family are very engaged in the local community and give back to the area as much as they can in appreciation of the success they were given by the hard working families during the past decades. He founded Maple Hills Orchard in 1999 and grows about 200 trees on 7 acres of land plus pumkin patch and scenic trails on a total of 30 acres. One day just a couple years back when he was ice fishing, he cut his hand grabbing a Northern by the gill plates. He went back into his small lab in his home and figured out a simple solution to grab a fish without hurting yourself, getting slimy and easily unhook the fish. LAKE LIFE WKND 037 One of my favorite road trips in the area is to Maplewood State Park.

Caution—It’s this time again: Road trip wknds ahead! I love Lakes Country for its rolling hills, scenic views and most of all its winding roads. Whenever I can, I get into the car and take a road trip to explore the area. There are many different routes and I like to share a new trip I just did recently. It is an easy day trip for the whole family to enjoy. Of course, you can take it by yourself or with a friend also.

Brittney Johnson is a young farmer from Underwood, Minnesota. Growing up with one foot in Central Minnesota and one foot in the Twin Cities shaped Brittney into a strong advocate for rural communities. She believes more can be done to help the people of Otter Tail County have a higher quality of life. She is committed to pushing for affordable health care, a solution to the addiction epidemic, and a strong rural economy.

Her policy experience began at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences Policy Engagement Program. As a PEP Fellow, Brittney worked with elected officials from across Minnesota on approaches to bipartisan policy development based on issues that impact rural communities.

She has since organized two community conversations with United States House Representative Collin Peterson about Healthcare and the Federal Farm Bill. She believes the best way to have representatives be accountable to their constituents is to bring them to the cities they represent. She hopes to continue this advocacy in St. Paul.

He opened a small disc golf shop in Ottertail selling equipment, giving classes and hoping to help grow the sport locally. Disc Golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target; it is played using rules similar to golf. It is often played on a course of 9 or 18 holes. Players complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee area toward a target, throwing again from the landing position of the disc until the target is reached. Usually, the number of throws a player uses to reach each target are tallied (often in relation to par), and players seek to complete each hole, and the course, in the lowest number of total throws.
